JEE Main 2024: Strategy for Mathematics

In the year 2024, nearly 12 lakh students have enlisted for the JEE Main examination, with a predominant focus on BE/B. Tech. The examination encompasses the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. As the commencement of JEE Main 2024 session 1 approaches, Ramesh Batlish, Managing Partner at FIITJEE and Head of FIITJEE NOIDA, offers valuable tips for aspirants to excel in the Math section.

The upcoming session 1 of JEE Main 2024 is scheduled to start on January 24th. The examinations for B. Arch and B. Planning are set for January 24th, while those for BE and B.Tech will be held on January 27th, 29th, 30th, and 31st, as well as February 1st. Approximately 12 lakh students have enrolled for this highly competitive engineering entrance exam, with a majority focusing on BE/B.Tech. The exam comprises three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with a total of 300 marks. As the commencement of JEE Main 2024 session 1 approaches, Ramesh Batlish, Managing Partner, FIITJEE, Head, FIITJEE NOIDA shares top tips for aspirants to ace Mathematics. Read on to know his suggestions about tricky questions, top scoring topics and more.

JEE Main 2024 Mathematics: Tricky questions
In Mathematics, one may expect some lengthy and tricky questions. You could expect some surprises in terms of question formats too. Take Assertion and Reason for example, where a statement and a reason are provided from which one must choose the right one. Sometimes there are two statements in a question – one assertion and one reason. For a correct response one has to determine whether these two statements are true and if the reason supports the assertion.

Important Chapters
Based on previous years questions the following chapters are important: Quadratic Equations & Expressions, Complex Numbers, Probability, Vectors, Matrices in Algebra; Circle, Parabola, Hyperbola in Coordinate Geometry; Functions, Limits, Continuity, Differentiability, Application of Derivatives and Definite Integral in Calculus. To ensure a good rank one must attempt all the easy and moderate level of questions.

Here is the list of the most marks-fetching topics for students to revise at the last moment:

  • Algebra: Quadratic Equations, Progression & Series, Statistics
  • Differential Calculus: Limits & Continuity
  • Integral Calculus: Definite Integrals
  • Trigonometry: Ratios & Identities
  • Co- Ordinate Geometry: Circles
  • Vectors Algebra: Chapter as a whole

Chapter-wise Tips for JEE (Main) Mathematics

  1. Previous JEE Main papers (PYQs) suggest that more attention should be given to Chapters like Vectors & 3-D Geometry, as Vectors and 3-D offer very less scope to examiner, as far as variety in questions is concerned. Additionally, some good questions may be asked in Complex Numbers, Permutation & Combination, Progression & Series. Hence mastering Complex numbers, Vectors, 3-D and Definite integral must be on priority list.
  2. Keeping in mind the trend of last years’ paper, all topics had been covered with more importance given to topics of Algebra, Co-ordinate Geometry and Calculus.
  3. To tackle questions from Co-ordinate Geometry all aspects and the results of Algebraic Calculations of properties of conics must be known.
  4. In chapters of Calculus like Functions, Differentiability, Application of derivatives one can fetch easy marks if graphical approach is adopted.
  5. Trigonometry though having less weightage must not be ignored as it is scoring. One must grasp all important formulae in Trigonometry. This is a scoring topic in Mathematics.
  6. Chapters like Matrices, Determinants, Statistics must also be covered to fetch some quick marks as the questions from this chapter are simple.
  7. As the Mathematics section would surely involve calculations, it is advisable to save some time on the other two subjects to utilize it for Mathematics.
  8. Avoid guessing as there is negative marking and every single mark is important when you are targeting a Top Rank.
